THEATRE

Detroit Public Theatre Announces Its 2017-18 Season

SKELETON CREW,  Sept. 28 – Oct. 29, 2017

The third in Dominique Morisseau’s acclaimed Detroit trilogy, Skeleton Crew, starring Ella Joyce, is poetic and powerful. Set at the start of the 2008 recession, a makeshift family of workers at the last exporting auto plant in the city navigate the possibility of foreclosure. Power dynamics shift and the co-workers are pushed to the limits of survival. When the line between blue collar and white collar gets blurred, how far over the line are they willing to step?

NO CHILD, Nov. 11 – 18, 2017

Sun transforms herself with rapid-fire precision into the teachers, students, parents and janitors who inhabit one New York City public school. See how one determined woman can change the lives of countless others in this tour de force piece that crackles with wit and wisdom.

PIKE STREET, Nov. 19 – 26, 2017

On the Lower East Side, a mother works hard to keep the electricity flowing for her daughter’s respirator while a hurricane looms nearby. As she prepares for disaster, a vibrant host of characters bring new meaning to the phrase “it takes a village.”

MARIE AND ROSETTA, Feb. 15 – March 11, 2018

Referred to by some as the “godmother of rock ‘n’ roll,” Sister Rosetta Tharpe influenced the likes of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash with her fierce guitar playing and unique style of gospel. Marie and Rosetta features electrifying songs and brings us into Tharpe’s first rehearsal with young Marie Knight before they set out to become one of the great duos in music history.

BIRTHDAY CANDLES, May 10 – June 3, 2018

Birthday Candles will take audiences on a magical 84 year journey with Ernestine Ashworth as she travels from her 17th birthday through her 101st, weaving together life and love from the stardust of the cosmos.
